Abstract

Elisabeth Gilman was born in New Haven, Connecticut, December 25, 1867. She was the younger daughter of Daniel Coit and Mary (Ketcham) Gilman. Her father was a college professor and the first president of The Johns Hopkins University. The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, writings, diaries, newspaper clippings, printed material, memorabilia, and photographs.

Abstract Harry S. Dickey was a Baltimore business man and collector, who was born in 1891 and received his B.A. degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1912. Dickey an admirer of the English poet, Lord Byron. James Ryder Randall (1839-1908) was a native of Maryland and penned the poem, Maryland, My Maryland! which was adopted as the state song in 1939. The collection includes autograph transcriptions of a letter to Charles F. Gunther of Chicago and the accompanying aforementioned poem.

J.H. van 't Hoff papers

Abstract

Jacobus Henricus (Henry) van 't Hoff (1852-1911) was a chemist credited with founding the science of stereochemistry, and in 1901 he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in chemistry. The majority of the papers are those reflecting family affairs or honors accorded van 't Hoff for his work. This collection does not contain his scientific or working papers except for notes of two lectures and copies of his published papers. The papers are mostly in Dutch. The papers span from 1837 to 1924.

Abstract Mary C. Goodwillie was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1870, the daughter of Thomas C. and Mary Goodwillie. Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer, who in 1895 wrote "The Red Badge of Courage", which earned him international acclaim. This collection of materials relating to Crane, compiled by Johns Hopkins University alumnus Richard Frary, includes letters (many by Crane), events ephemera, photographs, articles of literary criticism, and sheet music (inspired by his fiction).
